Mammals
The collection of 14,000+ mammals incorporates the large private collection of pioneer Colorado naturalist Edward Royal Warren and, coupled with the archive of Warren's field notes and photographs, is an invaluable resource documenting mammalian distribution and change in the first three decades of this century. Many other people have also added to the mammal collection over the years, including Donald Spencer (who collected mostly from Colorado and Arizona), Dallas A. Sutton (who deposited a valuable voucher chipmunk collection), and Leslie Viereck (who deposited a voucher collection of Mount McKinley specimens). David Armstrong, Associate Curator of Mammals, has contributed to the collections immensely, and has conducted research on mammalian taxonomy and ecology across Colorado since the 1970s. Additionally, the Zoology Section maintains educational collections for use by university classes, K-12 education, and nature centers.
