News From the Invertebrate Paleontology and Paleobotany Lab

Cheilosia miocenicus (UCM 4444)

Melissa Barton received Walker Van Riper and Schuchert and Dunbar Grants to support her research, and presented a poster with Richard K. Stucky on White River mammal paleoecology at the Society for Vertebrate Paleontology annual meeting in 2007. Mary Ellen Benson received a Walker Van Riper Grant and support from the Zena Hunter Andrews Fund to continue her work on diatoms from Florissant. Erin Leckey received Walker Van Riper and Shell Grants to support her work on oak-insect interactions in the Miocene.

Kathy Hollis, Kevin Webster, and Dena Smith presented a poster on fossil mollusk taphonomy at the Geological Society of America Annual Meetings in October 2008. Kathy Hollis completed her MS degree in Museum Studies and started work as the new Invertebrate Paleontology Collection Manager.

John Hankla and Chrissy Spence, both Museum and Field Studies students, joined the Smith Lab this year.

Congratulations to Jenell Thoene for being accepted into the BURST program, Carter Casad for research through the UROP team grant, and to Kevin Webster for Geology Mentorship support in Summer 08!

Congratulations to Carter Casad, Chelsea Corson and Kevin Webster, who all received funding from the UROP program to work on invertebrate and plant paleobiology projects this fall!

Herb Meyer (Park Paleontologist, Florissant Fossil Beds NM) and Dena Smith received support from the Rocky Mountain-CESU to conduct new fossil insect excavations at the Florissant Fossil Beds in summer 2009.

The Geological Society of America Special Volume Paleontology of the Late Eocene Florissant Formation, edited by Herb Meyer and Dena Smith, is now available for purchase through the GSA Bookstore.
