BOTANY SECTION & UNIVERSITY HERBARIUM (COLO)

Herbarium COLO is the Botany Section of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History on the Boulder campus.

The Herbarium is available to anyone with an interest in botany. Users include faculty and students, visiting scholars, private consultants, local naturalists, and botanists from a variety of public and private agencies.

An active center of Colorado botany, the Herbarium and the other sections of the University of Colorado Museum serve as one of the primary resources for the documentation and study of the rich natural history and biodiversity of Colorado.

The University of Colorado Museum Herbarium is located in the basement of the Clare Small Building on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder (campus map). During the academic year, the Herbarium is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. There are abbreviated hours during the summer (Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.).

Visitors are encouraged to call a Collection Manager in advance (303-492-3216) to arrange a date and time for their visit. You can also reach the Herbarium staff via email at herbcolo@colorado.edu. Tours of the Herbarium can be organized for groups such as classes from the University of Colorado and other institutions; these tours must be scheduled in advance.

Faculty position available:

Curator of Botany and Assistant Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology  (EBIO), University of Colorado Boulder, invite applications for a joint, tenure-track appointment as Curator of Botany and Assistant Professor. This position will be the first of several positions in phylogenetic biology as part of a broad initiative to enlarge and strengthen comparative and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado. Primary responsibilities will be to develop an active research program on any group of plants using phylogenetic and systematic approaches, to curate and develop the Museum's botany collections, and to teach in Museum and Field Studies and EBIO. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership position in advancing the role of the Herbarium.  The Herbarium houses a diverse collection of approximately a half million specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens and has strong holdings from the southern Rocky Mountain region. This regional strength is enhanced by collections from western North America, the American Arctic, the Altai and the Caucasus Mountains of Central Asia, the European alpine, and the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico. Applicants must have a doctoral degree; curatorial experience is important.
