Joe Ben Wheat Research Scholarship

PURPOSE: The scholarship was established to honor the memory of Joe Ben Wheat, a leading scholar of the American Southwest. Dr. Wheat was a curator at the University of Colorado Museum for over 40 years. He was a consummate scholar of the anthropology of the American Southwest and Colorado Plains. His work in Southwestern Indian jewelry, textiles, and pottery significantly expanded the scope and quality of the Museum's collections. His archaeological research in Paleoindian and Puebloan archaeology was original and challenging. The scholarship supports studies in Dr. Wheat's areas of research.

QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should be an exceptional graduate student in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies with research focused on the American Southwest.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT: One scholarship of $2,500 is awarded annually. Half of the scholarship is awarded within six weeks of the announcement of the award and the second half is awarded upon the Museum's acceptance of a short research report. The report can be delivered midway through the scholarship period, or thereafter. The scholarship supports the scholar, and may be used for any relevant expenses incurred in the course of the research.

APPLICATION: Applications should include a current curriculum vita, two letters of recommendation, a narrative description of the proposed research (not to exceed 3 pages) and, if possible, an example of prior research. A short statement of financial need may be included in the application letter.

DEADLINES: Deadline for application is March 17, 2008. Notification of the award will be by April 25. The award period begins June 1, 2008 and ends April 30, 2009.
